NAUGHTON Michael (AKA Naghton)  about 65 yrs, Roman Catholic section, Loc A-9-7, bur 11 Jun 1906, little was known of his family connections except that he was understood to have a brother in USA, the cause of his death was deemed to be robbery/murder at the door of his camp on ‘Volunteer Flat’ near Cue, WA where he had lived for about 10 yrs. An argument was overheard coming from his camp and then some gun shots were heard, a few minutes later he was discovered dead with four bullet wounds, his pockets had also been turned out. His occupation was that of a dry-blower and was also a licensed gold dealer but kept it mostly in a bank deposit, he had withdrawn a small amount of gold from his bankers just before the shooting with the intention of selling it. Just prior to his murder detectives had discovered that Naughtpn. was rather eccentric, and had been wearing a breast plate of rough manufacture for the past two months, saying that he had once been shot over the heart and desired protection in future. A lengthy investigation by the Police resulted in a person they had under surveillance, an Ahaz Wren, being charged with his murder, the jury later found him not guilty by virtue of insanity and was then sentenced to be held in custody in a facility for that purpose at the pleasure of the Crown.
