Death of Mr A. B. Gillam.

The grim monster—death—who has been making himself felt of late in our little community, claimed another victim, in the person of Mr A. B. Gillam, of Lancefield, on Tuesday, causing a general feeling of regret at the departure for ever of one who had been so long in the district, and so well known and highly respected.
Deceased had only been ill for about three weeks, and the day before his death he visited Laverton in company with his wife, for the purpose of consulting the doctor. The latter's opinion, which was communicated to Mrs Gillam, was that death was not far distant, and, as stated above, it claimed him on the following day, the cause being heart failure.
The late Mr. Gillam was born in Albany WA in 1855, and at the time of his death he was 54 years of age. After he had reached manhood he removed from Albany to Port Augusta, where he married Miss Louie S. Dungey sister of Mr J.E. F. Dungey, storekeeper of Lancefield. From Port Augusta he went to Newcastle, N. S.W., where he was connected for a number of years with the firm of Messrs Earp, Gillam and Co. He returned to West Australia about nine years ago, and was ever since in the employ of Messrs Dungey and Westwood, both of whom are brothers-in-law.
The late Mr Gillam, who had not enjoyed the best of health for some time, leaves a wife and daughter, to whom, he was greatly attached, to mourn their loss. In his daughter, Miss Hebe, who is a clever pianist, 16 years of age, having taken honours at several competitions in Albany, he took a great interest.
The funeral took place on Wednesday, the remains being followed, by a large number of vehicles from his late residence at Lancefield. On reaching Laverton the procession was considerably lengthened by his late Laverton friends, a number of whom, connected with the Masonic Order, of which the late Mr Gillam was a member, formed into line, and marched behind the hearse. The church service at the grave was conducted by the Rev, Mr. Holroyd, following which Wor. Bro. Leonard gave the impressive Masonic service. Mr J. Blethyn carried out the funeral arrangements.

The little boy, Herbert Hatton, aged 5 years and 9 months, who had been an inmate of the Laverton Hospital for upwards of three months suffering from hereditary Brights disease, succumbed to his painful illness on Tuesday afternoon. The little chap's mother resides at Burtville and is a sister of Mrs. Herbert. Gaston, his father having predeceased him some time ago at Southern Cross from a similar complaint.
Although it is asserted that life is sweet, there is no doubt that death under the circumstances—an incurable disease from which he would have been a sufferer as long as he lived—must have been a happy release. His remains were interred in the Laverton Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon and were followed thither by several Laverton residents The Rev. Richard Davis read the funeral service and the mortuary arrangements were conducted by Mr J. Blethyn Mr. Hatton’s bad luck in the way of death seems to still pursue him. A married sister of his (Mrs. Moore) died in the same institution about three months ago following which a few weeks later his baby boy of six months old.

MINING FATALITY IDA H G.M.
Coronial Inquiry

A fatal accident occurred at the Ida H G.M. on Monday when a man named William Hill, about 40 years of age, lost his life. The adjourned inquest was held yesterday before Mr H. Johnston, J.P., and a jury consisting of Messrs A. Downing (foreman), F. Williams and JD Lemon. Mr Rockett (inspector of mines) appeared on behalf of the Mines Department, Mr G. Michell represented the mine, and Mr A. Pinder was for the Miners' Union
Thomas Jackson stated that on the 23rd inst, he went down on the skip about
4 pm accompanied by Jack Pozzi, Charles Hartman and the deceased, William Hill. The skip stopped at the 1200ft level. Pozzi got out of the skip first Hill then, got out and stepped off the top of the skip into the open compartment and fell to the 1300ft level. Deceased should have seen Pozzi get out of the skip. The plat was well lit up Somebody on the plat sang out to Hill, but it was too late.
To Mr Rockett: The skip was standing. In all there were seven or eight lights at the plat where the accident happened. Charles Hartman and Jack Pozzi corroborated the evidence of the previous witness. William Henry Logan, timberman at the Ida H G.M, stated that he was at the plat at the 1200ft level on the 23rd inst about
4 pm waiting to go to the surface The skip went down containing the last three witnesses and the deceased.  The latter was the second man to get out of the skip. He went to the wrong side of the skip and stepped into the open compartment
Witnesses and others called out to him, but he evidently did not hear them. The plat was well lit up on each side. George Mitchell, underground manager of the Ida H G.M., gave evidence of going to the 1300ft level and finding the dead body of Hill and having it conveyed to the ambulance room To the Jury: The shaft was protected in accordance with the Mining Regulations
Constable Hunter gave evidence as to identification of body and going to the scene of the accident where he examined the body and found, amongst other injuries, the neck was broken.
The jury returned the verdict that deceased came to his death at the Ida H G.M. through stepping off the skip on the wrong side into the open compartment and that the happening was purely accidental, there being no blame attachable to anybody.

COX'S FIND FATALITY
Machine Miner Killed
Mate Seriously Injured

When he bored into an unexploded charge at Cox's Find mine, Cox's Find, at 11 a.m. yesterday, James I. Kerrisk, machine miner, was killed instantly, and Keith Healy, his mate, was seriously injured. Healy was brought to Kalgoorlie last night and will be taken to Perth early to-day for treatment.
Kerrisk was engaged breaking a large rock at the No. 4 level of the mine. He was drilling with a popper machine when he bored into an unexploded charge in the rock, the explosion killing him instantly. An ambulance was sent from Laverton at noon, and Healy was taken to the Laverton Hospital, which the ambulance reached at 2 p.m.

Cox's Find had been notified previously by Mr. Arthur Taylor, operator of the pedal transceiver here for Australian Aerial Medical Services, that the ambulance plane was available at Laverton if necessary. Later in the afternoon it was decided that Healy should be taken to Perth for treatment, and he was placed aboard the machine, which was piloted by Mr. Harry Ramsden, and brought to Kalgoorlie at 7.30 o'clock last night. The plane was met by the St. John ambulance and Healy was taken to the Kalgoorlie District Hospital to spend the night. The ambulance plane will fly Healy to Perth at 5 a.m. today. Laverton and Beria Mercury 16 September 1916, page 1

The police at Laverton received information on Monday evening that a man named James Leahy was found dead in his camp that morning at Hawk's Nest. Constables Thompson and Hunter proceeded to the spot and conveyed the body, which was in a somewhat advanced stage of decomposition, to the Laverton Morgue. An inquest was held on Tuesday before the acting coroner, Mr H. Johnston, J.P. and a jury consisting of Messrs J. K. Turner (foreman), A. Cutts and T Alnwick. From the evidence given by Constable Thompson the case was one of undoubted suicide.

He stated that when found the body was in a reclining position, the feet bare and there was a pea rifle between the legs pointing towards the mouth, leading to the assumption that deceased had placed the end of the barrel in his mouth and pulled the trigger with his great toe. A discharged cartridge was found in the pea rifle.
A letter addressed to the police and signed by deceased read thus: —"l am sorry to put you to any trouble. I am tired of this life and must leave it. May God forgive me. Another epistle of a lengthy and rambling nature was left by deceased addressed to the police. It was relative to the death of an old man named Timothy MCormack, whose dead body was found in the camp a couple of months ago death being due to natural causes. MCormack was an old friend of deceased, who appeared to be brooding over his demise. John Bounds, the man who reported the discovery of the dead body to the police, said in his evidence the last time he had seen Leahy alive was on the 8th inst when the latter arranged to see him again on Sunday, (The letters referred to above were dated 9th inst, so that was evidently the day on which the deed was committed.)
The jury returned a verdict that deceased came to his death through a gunshot wound. self-inflicted, but there was no evidence to show in what state of mind he was at the time. The remains, which were intered in the Laverton Cemetery, were followed to the grave by a good number of his late prospector friends.
